Adult Acting Workshops in Downtown Hartford

An empty bentwood chair under a single spotlight on a bare stage, surrounded by darkness

Out of the Hat is a series of adult acting workshops designed to explore the realities of auditioning, rehearsal process, adaptability, and performance in a collaborative theatre environment.

Created from years of experience both onstage and behind the table as a director, these workshops focus not only on performance, but on how actors function within the room: cold reads, callbacks, collaboration, adjustment, casting dynamics, and the practical side of theatre-making.

Whether returning to theatre after time away or looking to sharpen existing skills, participants are encouraged to take risks, think on their feet, and actively engage in the process.

Cold Reads. Walking into a room unprepared and performing effectively.
Callbacks. What changes between rounds, how to adjust, how to read the room.
Rehearsal Dynamics. How actors function within a process, not just how to prepare a scene.
Casting & Collaboration. The interpersonal reality of being in the room with directors and other actors.

The room is small. The group is small. There is no audience, no performance pressure, no showcase at the end. What there is: material you have never seen, a director who will push you, and other actors who take the work as seriously as you do. You will read cold. You will be redirected. You will make choices under pressure and find out which ones hold. This is not a class. It is a working room for actors who want to get sharper.

The empty chair is yours.
